This nondescript little lens is a Carl Zeiss Jena 14cm (140mm) f18 Protar. Our research indicates that they were commonly found on Wide Angle Kodak cameras - fixed focus, 8x10 cameras that were often employed for forensic or crime scene photography. This lens was made with a small f18 aperture to be suited for architecture, interiors, and reproduction work. Although this lens has a slow relative speed, the draw of the lens was the fact that it produced an image with even illumination across the whole image circle. This lens has coverage up to 9x7 inches, and could plausibly be used on an 8x10 camera with very limited movements, but would be better suited for 5x7 or 4x5 use.
On an 8x10 camera, the 140mm focal length would be akin to having a 19mm super wide angle lens. Crazy! Of course, it will take a trick or two to mount this lens on most 8x10 cameras, positioning it close enough to the ground glass to focus at infinity but it is doable! You could even build your own fixed-focus 8x10 box to mount this because with a minimum aperture of f18 and being super wide angle, focusing is one of the least of your worries.
